From Debt to Economic Prosperity: Yusuf Defends Kano’s Financial Turnaround
Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has revealed that his administration inherited not only empty government coffers but also debt of about ₦9,000 from one of the state’s bank accounts left behind by the immediate past administration.
This was contained in a statement issued by governors spokesperson Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa on Thursday.
Speaking during the official distribution of permanent and pensionable appointment letters to 4,315 former BESDA teachers on Thurday in Kano, the governor said the situation has since been reversed, with billions of naira now available in government accounts.
He accused the previous administration of reckless financial practices, including employing more than 128 tax consultants without delivering any tangible results for the state.
“If they believe in themselves, they should come forward and show us the tangible work they did in Kano. Instead, they exhausted the treasury to the extent that Kano was left indebted to banks,” Yusuf declared.
The governor stressed that his administration has focused on prudent management of resources and blocking leakages to rebuild the state’s finances.
“We have sacrificed our own comfort to make sure Kano’s money is spent on the people, not on leaders. That is our guiding principle and we will not compromise it,” he said.
Yusuf also cited the state’s improved performance in the 2025 NECO SSCE examinations as evidence of the impact of his administration’s investments in education.
He assured that his government would continue to channel resources into education, healthcare, and infrastructure while maintaining transparency and accountability despite opposition criticism.
